DESCRIBE THE IMPACT INDIANA YOUTH GROUP HAS HAD ON THE INDY REGION.
Indiana Youth Group (IYG) is committed to empowering the voices of LGBTQ+ youth and providing safe spaces for them to live and build community. LGBTQ+ youth can face major challenges when coming out to their parents. These children can struggle with chronic homelessness, substance abuse, and thoughts of suicide without the support of their parents.
Statistics show that 1 in 4 queer youth are kicked out of their homes by their guardians.
IYG works to combat this issue by providing queer youth with basic needs such as clothing, laundry services, food, and rehousing opportunities. IYG’s rapid rehousing program, called Project PRISM, helps youth find stability through long-term living solutions instead of temporary housing situations. IYG also provides skills training so that youth are able to sufficiently provide for themselves once they are on their own.
IYG also supports the mental health of the queer youth it serves. There are many community events hosted throughout the week that create safe spaces for queer youth to make connections and discuss the challenges they face. Any person that arrives at the facility can also seek out professional counseling to talk through any issues they may be having. A crisis hotline is also available for anyone experiencing thoughts of self-harm
WHAT IMPACT WOULD $14,000 HAVE ON YOUR ORGANIZATION AND THE COMMUNITIES YOU SERVE.
As we tackle this issue in Indiana, and the number of LGBTQ+ youth in need of services increases, it can become harder to keep refilling the community pantry for the children experiencing food insecurity. This donation would help keep the pantry stocked, assist with purchasing items needed for laundry, and continue to expand the programming offerings for the youth. IYG is planning to expand their services out to more rural towns so that every young person in Indiana has access to the same resources, community, and support they need.
